Connecting to Hopper with Mac OS X

There are 2 alternative means of transferring files between your Macintosh and Hopper. Below are instructions for the two methods.

How to create a connection to Hopper using "Connect to Server"

  1. Select Connect to Server from the Go menu in the finder (it's at the top of your desktop)

    Connect to Server
  2. Type in smb://hopper.bendigo.latrobe.edu.au/yourusername in the Server Address field.
Do not type in "smith1" as seen in the picture: replace that with your hopper username.
When you've done that, click the Connect button (bottom right of the "connect to server" window)

    smb setting
  3. In the window that then pops up, you must type in
    Your Hopper Username
    Your Hopper Password
    Then, click the OK button.

    SMB/CIFS Filesystem Authentication
  4. After a momentary delay, an icon representing your connection to hopper should appear on the desktop. This represents your hopper connection. You can drag files into hopper now, delete them, etc. For example, try double clicking on the connection icon: it will open a window: this is your hopper account - which, initially, is empty.

File Transfer Protocol (FTP)

There are various programs available that make it easy to use FTP. Once upon a time, we all used command line tools to do ftp. You don't have to any more though. FTP has been around for years. It pre-dates the world wide web, back to when the only people who could use the internet were those who knew how it worked. FTP is good because it doesn't matter what brand of computer you use, if you have an FTP client then you can get and put files from computer to computer.

Don't try to use IE (your microsoft web browser) to do FTP login to hopper. Most microsoft IE releases won't log you in properly. Even if you do get logged in IE won't always show you the public link in your directory.

We have provided instructions below on configuring Fetch. There are hundreds of FTP programs available, this is just one of them.

  1. Open Fetch
  2. Go to File and then on New Connection. In the New Connection window, enter the Host Name: hopper.bendigo.latrobe.edu.au, Username: your username and Password: your password and then click Connect

    Fetch New Connection
  3. You use the Put button to upload your files from your computer to Hopper.
