Muslim Leadership Program 2011 – an update

We are pleased to report that the two-month long Muslim Leadership Training Program has reached its very successful completion. We celebrated with a wonderful graduation ceremony at the Victorian Parliament on October 28th with representatives of the Victorian Government and La Trobe University officiating. The Government of Victoria has been a major supporter of this initiative.

This was the fifth year of this important international program, which now has over 100 alumni. It has grown to include participants from Melbourne, Sydney and South East Asia. This year we had two from Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, and Thailand and one from Singapore. Funding for this group was provided by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade through the Communities Outreach Program, the Australia Malaysia Institute and the Australian Thai Institute.

In 2011 for the first time, with support from the Federal Attorney General’s Department, we were able to welcome six leaders from Sydney into this program.

This two month journey has been intense and exciting, invigorating, challenging and mostly empowering. These young leaders will now become part of a new network of Muslim Intellectuals being facilitated by the Centre for Dialogue. The ‘M’ Network will link Muslim intellectuals across Asia and Australia to encourage an on-going dialogue and give voice to issues, concerns and perspectives that are local, regional and global.

Dr Sven Schottmann will coordinate The ‘M’ Network and any queries about this may be sent to his email.

Project Manager Mr Larry Marshall and Dr Sven Schottmann coordinated this program, working closely with the Islamic Council of Victoria. Our thanks go to the many individuals and organisations that helped to make this course one of the richest we have ever conducted.

This program is organised by the Centre for Dialogue in association with the Islamic Council of Victoria and with the support of the Commonwealth of Australia through the Australia-Malaysia Institute, the Australia-Thailand Institute and the Regional Communities Outreach Program of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade; by the Federal Attorney-General’s Department; and by the State of Victoria through the Department of Premier and Cabinet.
