Australia-Malaysia Dialogue
A dialogue between Australia and Malaysia will be held at La Trobe University in Melbourne on the 5th and 6th of December 2011.
This is an initiative of the Centre for Dialogue, with funding from the Australia-Malaysia Institute. The first dialogue jointly sponsored with CENPRIS, Universiti Sains Malaysia, was held in Penang. This second dialogue is jointly sponsored with the Institute of ASEAN Studies and Global Affairs (INSPAG), FSPPP, Universiti Teknologi MARA Malaysia.
The objectives of the Australia-Malaysia Dialogue are:
- To consider policy issues of interest to the two countries, with a particular focus on the Asia-Pacific region and global security;
- To consider ways of improving dialogue and cooperation between the two countries, and intellectual exchanges, with a policy focus;
- To make recommendations, where appropriate, to governments, regional organisations, academic institutions and other relevant stakeholders in keeping with the two objectives outlined above; and
- To publish in different formats the results of papers presented and discussions that form part of the Dialogue.
The Melbourne dialogue will bring together from both countries leading academics, other experts, serving and retired diplomats and policy-makers, senior journalists and community leaders.
The Themes for this dialogue are two-fold:
- Main Theme: Malaysia and Australia addressing regional and global challenges
- Sub Theme: The challenge of managing plural societies
The Malaysian Team will be led by Dato’ Dr Mohd Yusof Ahmad, and will include Prof Azhari Karim, Dr K. S. Nathan and Professor Datuk Shamsul A.B Director, Institute of Ethnic Studies (KITA) , National University of Malaysia (UKM)
