Dr May Akl, Press Secretary, General Michel Aoun Press Office
Monday 13 July
Dr May Akl is the Press Secretary for General Michel Aoun, leader of the Free Patriotic Movement and a Member of Parliament in Lebanon. General Aoun was formerly Commander of the Lebanese army and transitional Prime Minister. The Free Patriotic Movement stands on a liberal and secular platform and is popular with the Lebanese Christian community. The Movement won 19 out of 128 seats at the Lebanese General Elections held on 7 June 2009. It has since formed an alliance with the Hezbollah-led March 8 coalition to form the Lebanese opposition.
In this seminar Dr Akl explored the complex relationship between identity, religion and politics in Lebanon. Her seminar provided frank insights into the key issues that shape Lebanese politics and society, including bilateral relations with Israel, Syria, Iran and other regional actors. Particular attention was given to the on-going problem of Palestinian refugees in Lebanon and possible ways to resolve this issue. Dr Akl also commented on the alliance between Hezbollah and the Free Patriotic Movement.
