Dr Susan Lawler

I received a Ph.D. in evolutionary genetics in the United States at Washington University (St. Louis). I became a post-doctoral researcher in the Department of Genetics, La Trobe University in 1992, then moved to the Albury-Wodonga campus as a Lecturer. Since then I have been in the Department of Environmental Management and Ecology, where I contribute to undergraduate teaching and post-graduate programs in the areas of conservation, ecology and evolutionary genetics. I am currently the Post-graduate coordinator and a member of the Faculty Research and Graduate Studies Committee.

I have received a number of awards for excellence in teaching, including the Faculty Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching (2007), a La Trobe University Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning (2008) and an Australian Learning and Teaching Council Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning (2008).

My research combines an interest in applied ecology with an ability to determine evolutionary relationships or taxonomic status using genetic approaches. I have an ARC Discovery Indigenous Researchers Development Grant (2006) which supports a PhD student project on arsenic in bogong moths. A former ARC Discovery Grant (2002) explored the relationship between freshwater crayfish and their flatworm symbionts. Most recently, I have received an Australian Geographic Sponsorship (2008) to examine an unusual population of freshwater crayfish in the Buffalo River.
