Jeff Webb joined the staff at Deme in November 2007 as a post-doctoral fellow with Dr. Phil Suter. Jeff's research interests focus on the taxonomy and evolution of aquatic insects, particularly mayflies (Ephemeroptera).

Jeff's current research, as part of the National Taxonomy Hub, examines the systematics of the small minnow mayflies (Baetidae) of Australia. The baetids are one of the most abundant taxa in running water ecosystems throughout Australia, are major prey items for fish and other predators, and vary in their tolerance to various forms of pollution, making them ideal candidates for use in water quality monitoring. Less than half of the ~50 species known to occur in Australia are formally described and named, however, so obtaining meaningful results in water quality monitoring programs has been difficult. Using a combination of morphological analysis, DNA sequencing, and databases, Jeff hopes to be able to catalog and describe the baetid species of Australia.
