Dr Catherine MeathrelCatherine Meathrel has been employed at La Trobe University, Wodonga since February 1995 in the Department of Environmental Management and Ecology. She was promoted to Senior Lecturer in December 2001. She was/is an academic staff representative for the Campus Computer Committee and Campus Academic Advisory Committee, the New Library and Nursing Facility Committee, University Council Library Committee, University Council Equality, Diversity and Wellbeing Committee, Public Relations and Student Liaison Committee and La Trobe University Animal Experimentation and Ethics Committee. She currently Chairs the Campus Library Advisory Committee and the Faculty Equality, Diversity and Wellbeing Committee. During Catherine's time at La Trobe, she was appointed to the editorial board of Marine Ornithology for a term of four years and nominated to chair the Antarctic Division's Animal Experimentation, Ethics and lonising Radiation Committee and the North East Catchment Management Authority. She has also developed strong research links with sixteen Landcare groups in northern Victoria and was Vice President for the Ovens Landcare Network and the President of Warby Ranges Landcare and Rabbit Control Group. Catherine was an Australian Research Council Postdoctoral Fellow from January 1992 - January 1995 at Murdoch University, Murdoch, W.A. before she moved to Wodonga. At Murdoch University, Catherine worked in conjunction with Professors J.S. Bradley and R.D. Wooller, conducting research on the Tasmanian Short-tailed Shearwater Puffinus tenuirostris . Now in its 62nd year, this study on the population ecology of muttonbirds in Bass Strait, Tasmania, is one of the longest, uninterrupted studies of vertebrates in the world. This species, a Pacific Basin transequatorial migrant, is important both economically and socially to the Aboriginal peoples of Australia. In addition to this major continuing research collaboration, Catherine continues to conduct extensive research on seabirds, most recently, Pacific Gulls and Little Penguins in Bass Strait, Tasmania.
