(THE SCIENCE OF EXPLOSIONS) A NATIONAL SCIENCE WEEK EVENT FOR STUDENTS The Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI) is delighted to announce that our 2009 Hartung Youth lecturer is Dr John Reid, an explosives expert from Thales Australia . The Hartung Youth lectures are held for Years 10 and 11 students. They aim to inspire a love of and fascination with Science. In the 2009 lectures, students will learn about a whole range of high energy reactions from the past and present – including the air bag reaction. This lecture promises to be a spectacular experience, in the tradition of the lectures given by Professor Hartung over 50 years ago. The Melbourne lecture will be held in the famous 3 storey Masson Theatre in the School of Chemistry at the University of Melbourne , where Professor Hartung conducted his amazing demonstrations! The lecture also will be presented in Albury-Wodonga, Morwell and Warrnambool. The lectures will be held in National Science Week, 17-21 August, 2009. The dates and locations are: Monday 17 August, 11am to 12noon Tuesday 18 August Wednesday 19 August Friday 21 August Lectures are free of charge, however, schools must make a formal booking.
