Faculty roles in DfL
DfL is something the whole faculty can, and should, be involved in. The impact of the undergraduate review and renewal will affect nearly every member of staff, not to mention your students. Below outlines staff positions likely to be involved in DfL tasks and development, and their likely responsibilities. Dean/Associate Dean [Academic]
- Have overall responsibility for coordinating and leading your Faculty’s DfL Project;
- Plan and direct efforts of Faculty Educational Designers;
- Coordinate, with DfL Project Team, the efforts of the First Year Coordinator, DfL Project Officer, DfL Liaison Curriculum & Academic Developer, and Academic Language and Learning Unit [ALLU] staff.
Head of School/Department
- Lead and coordinate DfL work–particularly mapping and standard setting–across your own School’s undergraduate courses;
- Coordinate with Associate Dean [Academic] and other Heads to ensure consistency of implementation across Schools within Faculty.
Director/Coordinator of Teaching and Learning
- Assist the Head of School in coordinating and supporting DfL work in your School’s courses;
- Advise the Head of School and Associate Dean [Academic] on discipline/field-related curriculum design, teaching & learning issues;
- Assist course coordinators in resolving discipline/field-related curriculum design, teaching & learning issues; and
- Liaise with the Faculty’s educational developers and designers, the First Year Coordinator and DFL Project Officer.
First Year Coordinator
- Assist in the development of First-Year curricula;
- Coordinate efforts to improve orientation and transition activities;
- Ensure effective design and delivery of First Year academic preparation and support programs; and outreach to First-Year students.
Course Coordinator
- Lead the review, mapping, standard setting, and redesign efforts within your course;
- Coordinate with other Course Coordinators to ensure consistency of implementation within your School.
Subject Coordinator
If you coordinate a subject – and particularly if it is a designated ‘cornerstone’, ‘midpoint’ or ‘capstone’ subject –
- Lead subject-specific review, standard-setting, and redesign efforts; and
- Coordinate with other Subject Coordinators both within your year level and other year levels to ensure consistency of implementation within your course.
Lecturer in subject[s]
- Collaborate and assist subject and course coordinators in review, standard-setting and redesign efforts; and
- Participate in relevant Faculty and University-sponsored DfL workshops such as the Three-day workshops run by the Curriculum Teaching and Learning Centre [CTLC].
Tutor/Demonstrator in subject[s]
- Participate in relevant Faculty and University-sponsored DfL workshops such as the Tutor and Demonstrator workshops run by the Curriculum Teaching and Learning Centre [CTLC].
