Dr David Hirst is a Senior Lecturer within the Curriculum, Teaching and Learning Centre (CTLC). David's first love is music, taking up a position as Lecturer in Electronic Music and Composition at the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music in 1986. In 1989, David was appointed as Senior Lecturer in Contemporary Music Technology at La Trobe, a post he held until the Music Department's closure in 1999. David served as the Head of the Music Department within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences from 1993 to 1995. He has also held a position as a Senior Lecturer in Educational Design at the University of Melbourne from 2000 to 2007 before returning to La Trobe in 2008. In 2011, he was seconded to the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences as Associate Professor and Director, Design for Learning.
While David's research interests are in educational technology and music technology, his role within the CTLC is to work collaboratively with academic teaching staff and staff from other support services to develop high quality applications for teaching and program awards. This role also includes providing informed advice and support to groups of staff, schools and faculties in the development of applications for funded projects designed to enhance the learning experiences of La Trobe students. David contributes to initiatives in blended learning and teaching and the use of educational technologies in the wider university community; works on curriculum development and other learning and teaching related projects; and teaches into the Graduate Certificate in Higher Education.
