The 'Effective Teaching' workshop offers a wealth of practical, research-based guidelines, strategies and techniques to make teaching, assessing, giving feedback, and providing learning support more effective in promoting deep learning for students — and more efficient and rewarding for you.
In addition to gaining exposure to and hands-on experience with a variety of strategies, you will review and discuss key research findings on effective learning. There will be many opportunities to reflect on your own practice, learn from and contribute to the learning of other participants, and identify possible applications to your work. Throughout, the workshop will highlight and illustrate La Trobe University's relevant policies, procedures and guidelines; particularly those related to the Design for Learning Project.
There are, of course, many ways to teach well, as research and good practice amply illustrate. This workshop will employ mini-lectures, demonstrations, video clips, pair and small-group work, teaching cases, short writing tasks, and formative assessments to demonstrate a wealth of well-tested options that can be adapted to a range of disciplines and levels. You'll also receive materials and resources for future reference and follow up. All participants who successfully complete the workshop receive a formal letter of confirmation.
Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs) for the "Effective Teaching" workshop
The overall goal of this workshop is to help you make your teaching — and, if relevant, your curriculum review and (re)design work — more effective, efficient, and enjoyable. To that end, it is designed and organised to help participants achieve the Intended Learning Outcomes (ILO)s listed below.
By the conclusion of this workshop you can expect to have:
- Adapted at least three (3) research-based strategies or techniques for teaching, assessing, and/or giving feedback to apply in your work;
- Identified at least (3) key theories, research findings, and/or core concepts relevant and applicable to your own work;
- Drafted or revised at least two (2) Intended Learning Outcome (ILO) statements for a subject of your choice;
- Produced a first-draft "constructively aligned" map of teaching, learning, assessment, and feedback activities in a subject of your choice;
- Identified at least three (3) practical next steps you and your colleagues can take to help students improve their learning;
- Identified at least two (2) practical, promising professional development options re: teaching which you plan to follow up; and,
