Tutor and demonstrator workshops
In Semester One 2013, La Trobe University will offer a series of workshops for sessional tutors, laboratory demonstrators, and facilitators in work-based and enquiry-based learning programs. The common purpose of all these workshops is to help sessional staff make their teaching at La Trobe more effective, more efficient, and more personally rewarding.
The Curriculum, Teaching and Learning Centre (CTLC) works closely with staff in Faculties to design and develop workshops that meet the needs of their tutors, demonstrators and facilitators. A series of short three-hour workshops have been developed to provide sessional staff with research-based, practical guidelines and strategies for teaching students in small group situations. Workshops are generally scheduled before or soon after the commencement of semester. New in 2013 the CTLC is offering both of the tutoring workshops as self-paced online modules. This will allow access for ALL tutors regardless of their campus, or other commitments. Due to this there is a reduced offering of face-to-face workshops.
Who should attend?
All sessional staff new to tutoring, demonstrating, facilitating at La Trobe are required to attend the face to face workshop Effective Tutoring 1: Practical Strategies for Engaging Students and Promoting Learning or the equivalent self-paced online module Introduction to Small Group Teaching at University. These programs provide research-informed fundamentals of learning and teaching to enhance student learning.
A second workshop, Effective Tutoring 2: Assessment, Feedback and Marking for Learning will be offered as a 3-hour online module only.
Since each program/Faculty decides which tutors it will pay to attend which workshops, please check with your subject coordinator before enrolling in any workshop. Claims for payment for participating in CTLC workshops must be accompanied by a copy of the CTLC Certificate of Completion.
