The Centre for Sport and Social Impact receive funding boost
The Centre for Sport and Social Impact (CSSI) has been awarded a $500,000 tender for the Evaluation Program for Creating Healthy Sporting Environments Demonstration Project funded by VicHealth and delivered by Leisure Networks.
The Demonstration Project is a 2.5 year $2 million demonstration project working with 100 sports clubs across 5 local government areas in the wider Geelong region. A key objective of the project is to support clubs to become healthy sporting environments by helping them achieve a number of minimum standards. These standards relate to the responsible use of alcohol; healthy eating; reduced tobacco use; protection from harmful effects of UV; sports injury reduction; creating a safe and inclusive environment for women; and reducing race-based discrimination.
The development and implementation of an extensive independent evaluation is a major part of the overall project and will determine:
the extent to which the aims and objectives of the demonstration project have been achieved;
the health and social impacts of delivering minimum standards in sports club environments; and
the capacities of sports clubs to create healthy sporting environments.
The team for this project was led by Associate Professor Matthew Nicholson (CSSI), and comprised Professor Russell Hoye (CSSI), Dr Emma Sherry (CSSI), and Dr Sue Dyson from the Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society (ARCSHS) at La Trobe University.
The project will commence in September 2010 and conclude in June 2013.
The Centre for Sport and Social strives to influence the future of sport manaement practices and policy and their impact on society through real world research and engagement with industry and government.
The CSSI draws from the disciplines of organisational behaviour, management, marketing, economics, law, sociology and public policy to investigate issues that impact on the efficacy of sport organisations operating in the corporate, public and nonprofit sectors of the economy and their impact on society.
