Trevor Budge holds qualifications in Arts and Urban Planning, he is a Certified Practicing Planner, and a Life Fellow of the Planning Institute of Australia. In 2007 he was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Institute. He chairs the Institute's National Education Committee which accredits planning courses, the Institute’s Planning for Health and Wellbeing Committee and the Institute's Sri Lanka Post Tsunami Recovery Project.

He is currently undertaking a PhD on the changing social, community and economic role of small country towns. He teaches in the University's Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences where he coordinates the Master of Arts (Community Development), the Graduate Diploma in Rural and Regional Planning and the Bachelor of Urban, Rural and Environmental Planning.

His research is focused on the role and function of small towns and the changes in the peri-urban areas of Australia. He has a particular interest in land use planning and regional development, rural and small town planning and community consultation, urban - rural fringe issues, preservation of agricultural land, the historical development of 'settler societies', and planning and development in Sri Lanka.
