Kate has been appointed a Charles La Trobe Fellow to examine the role of Aboriginal people in Aboriginal Sentencing Courts. Kate has been a magistrate in Victoria and Western Australia where she worked on establishing Koori and Community Courts.

She is currently the chairperson of the Victorian Ministerial Research Council on climate change adaptation and a member of the Premier's Climate Change Reference Committee. She has published on legal matters, editing a book on the cultural politics of the jury in Australia (UWA Press) and authoring a book derived from her doctorate on Western Australian Courts of Native Affairs (Fremantle Arts Centre Press).

Kate is a member of the Australian Institute of Judicial Administration's Cultural Awareness Committee and currently serves on the AIJA committee developing a conference on Aboriginal Sentencing Courts (2009).
