VCE Workshops

Department of Computer Science & Computer Engineering

As part of La Trobe University’s commitment to developing a closer relationship with schools in Victoria, the Department of Computer Science and Computer Engineering has been successfully conducting on campus IT workshops every year which have benefited many Year 10, 11 and 12 students across Victoria. The response from students and teachers who have attended these workshops has been overwhelmingly positive.

We offer the following workshops which aim to complement the new 2007 VCE IT curriculum:

Bookings for 2007 are NOW OPEN. Workshops are free of charge and one or more sessions may be attended depending on your availability. Please allow an additional 1/2 hour per visit for feedback and debriefing.

VCE IT Workshop Descriptions

Systems Development (New in 2007)

Students are taken through the analysis, design and implementation phases of a real-life project, focusing on the delivery of web content for mobile devices such as PDAs and mobile phones. A practical component will look at mobile device detection using PHP and the merits of creating hand-held style sheets versus building a mobile specific website.

Suitable for Years 11 & 12.
Duration: 11/2 hours.

Computer Networks Workshop (Updated in 2007)

The workshop begins with an elementary introduction to communication principles including a hands-on practical component. Students are then given an insight into how the modern university network is structured. They are guided through the maintenance, security and reliability issues of the modern communication network and the Internet.

Suitable for Years 10 - 12.
Duration: 11/2 hours.

Project Management Workshop (Updated in 2007)

Students are introduced to the principles of project management (analysis, design, development, implementation, testing and evaluation), with an emphasis on project planning within the design stage. They are given a scenario and guided through the process of developing a project to completion. Real-life case studies are discussed.

Suitable for Years 11 & 12.
Duration: 11/2 hours.

Computer Systems Workshop

Our most popular workshop in 2006, the Computer Systems workshop provides students with an interactive insight into the past, present and future of modern computer systems. In small groups, students are given the opportunity to take apart and reassemble a computer.
