| Abstract: |
|
Since first enrolling in the Graduate Diploma in Computer Science in 1990, I have had the opportunity to see how research supervision styles within the Department of CS & CE have influenced the attitudes, the work output and the quality of life of many research students. Research postgraduates talk to each other a lot. Over the last couple of years, SPRIG has provided a very useful forum for the discussion of many things, including research supervision.
A recent influence on supervision practices is the greater emphasis on targeted publication in high impact journals. Since many of the publications produced by the Department rely on input from research students, the supervision that those students receive can and does affect the quality of the publications produced.
In this seminar, I will raise a number of points relevant to research supervision, and present several hypothetical situations, all based to a greater or lesser extent on observations collected during my presence around the Department for the last seventeen years. In part, the intention of this seminar is to stimulate discussion and to raise awareness amongst research supervisors and supervisees of how supervisory styles can impact on research students.
Michael Hill.
