Abstract:   Due to the large variation in capabilities in mobile devices and the lack of true standards, it is hard to develop applications for the mobile environment that will behave similar on all devices and in different environments. This research introduces the concept of a Holistic Framework that aim to abstract away implementation differences and present functionality to the application in a uniform way. As a part of the evaluation of the Framework, we have implemented and evaluated one central component of the Framework, the Holistic Connection. The test environment is a J2ME application that transfers data with Bluetooth and GPRS over the JXTA network. We present a method for choosing the optimal connection and implement real time connection switching. We describe the architecture of the framework and discuss the feasibility of the holistic framework using the holistic connection as an example.
