Abstract:   Emerging requirements set by mobility, resource virtualization, quality of service and security, indicate that the network can step up to a much larger role than a mere connectivity. Users want services that speak to their specific needs, not a mere connection. Service providers want to introduce their revenue generating services on an on-demand basis, with quality of service, and security without having to build up costly physical network infrastructure. At its core, the Internet functions quite well for connectivity but in order to move forward, it must provide a global infrastructure for services at the internet service provider level. To fulfill this vision, a service architecture is needed, that is, an architecture wherein end-to-end services compose, on-demand, across network domains, technologies, and administration boundaries. This talk will address issues pertinent to the development of such a service architecture, in particular, focusing on several relevant research activities within the Advanced Research in Networking (ARN) lab at the University of Technology, Sydney: • Architecture for providing end-to-end Quality of Service to Internet applications, • Development of a programmable Internet service platform, • Mobile Internet and location-based services, and • Optical Grid service for data-intensive applications.
