| Abstract: |

Many lecturers at La Trobe are required to prepare materials for their students that involve mathematical and other symbolic code. They are simultaneously required to produce accessible materials. In fact, many find it is almost all they can do to provide lecture demonstrations on foils that can be handwritten and then 'animated' (by hand) to show the steps in a process.
What should be done is that materials should be developed in an accessible format (probably XHTML) and the symbolic matter should be encoded in symbolic markup (MathML, ChemML, etc.). This would make materials available to all students, regardless of the device they use or any disabilities, needs or preferences they may have.
This seminar will describe the processes and raise the issues associated with doing the job 'the right way' (which happens also to be a legal requirement).
