Research Title/Topic: An Optimal Model to Build an Accessible System to Facilitate Development of Competent Serious Games in Education.
Supervisor: Dr. John Rankin
Description:
Modern Video Games are potentially engaging and even addictive; they have become one of the most popular media for entertainment between young and adult people. Why not try to use those engaging and addictive powers for a more fruitful purpose? “Serious Games” or SG, have a carefully thought-out educational purpose but they are not the typical educational games or CAL of the past that taught kids the basic ABCs. In fact, SG could be much more complex and sophisticated than the fanciest video game for entertainment out there today. One of the great challenges in the development of SG lies in how to incorporate the productive knowledge in a video game that at the same time has to be really fun, and how to make SG technology easily accessible for everyone who needs it. Could most subject matter experts make a game about their particular way of presenting things? If we give them the tools, they certainly can. My research will focus on the development of practical tools that can help inventors who are inexperienced at programming, to create serious games. One approach to accomplish this is to build translation methodologies to mod video games into an effective SG genre. In order to create an optimal model for accessible development of SG capable of surpassing any other teaching method, I will study what was missing in earlier efforts to use computers to improve education. It is also necessary to unravel and find the precise mixture of game ingredients that result in high levels of entertainment and addiction of the modern video games of today. Finally, I will also survey student responses to various GT development software and prototype SG.
