Research Title/Topic: Soft Computing Approaches for Motif Discovery
Supervisor: Assoc. Prof. Justin Wang & Prof. N. J. Hoogenraad
Description:
Identification of DNA sequence transcription factor binding sites (TFBS) in biological sequences is an important problem. Current approaches still achieve averagely low recognition rate owing mainly to low signal to noise ratio and variability binding sites. My research focused on the discovery of TFBS using soft computing approaches specifically neural networks and genetic algorithm (GA). The motif discovery is approached from the perspective of unsupervised learning in neural networks. Whereas in GA a more efficient multi-model search problem will be targeted. Innovation in both algorithms and architectural design will be proposed in this research.
