Description:
XML represents an eXtensible Markup Language which has become a de-facto standard for data representation and exchange on the WWW and elsewhere. Over the years, more data sources have aggressively expressed their contents using XML. The adoption of XML by the real world applications has motivated the research community to be constantly involved in many areas including schema formulation, XML query languages, XML query optimization, etc. Among these areas, XML query optimization has always been a challenging topic due to the constant influx of many data storage models. The traditional query optimization for a complex XML data model is becoming more costly since indexing techniques require a lot of search space. The semantics defined in the XML schema can make a vast contribution to the query optimization area, where these semantics can be utilized to answer the XML queries more efficiently and sometimes without the need to access the database in order to query the answer. I am currently focusing on semantic query optimization for XML data. This research focuses on the techniques and algorithms to identify opportunities for transforming XML Queries into their equivalent semantic ones by utilizing semantics defined in the given XML schema.
