Description:
Sensor networks realise an all-pervasive distributed network to create an intelligent environment. The possible applications of sensor networks are wide-ranging, from intelligent buildings and sensor-controlled chemical plants, to habitat-monitoring and convert military operations. The applications of sensor network are endless, limited only by the human imagination. The direction of research in sensor networks is toward overcoming the challenges of scalability, reliability, robustness, and power-efficiency, so that a variety of applications can be implemented in highly constrained scenarios.
An important bottleneck in the operation of sensor nodes is the available energy. Sensors usually rely only on their battery for power, which in many cases cannot be recharged or replaced. Hence, the available energy at the nodes should be considered as a major constraint while designing protocols. For instance, it is desirable to give the user an option to trade off network lifetime for fault-tolerance or accuracy of results.
Hardware design for sensor nodes should also consider energy efficiency as a primary requirement. The micro-controller, operating system, and application software should be designed to conserve power.
My research will be undertaken based on the energy management issues in sensor networks. Since the energy resources in sensor networks are very scarce and not replaceable, designing an efficient, adaptive, flexible energy management scheme becomes critical. Some other works can also be done to explore the feasibility of more adaptive sensor network applications, more flexible sensor network operation systems, and more power efficient micro-controllers, which are closely related to sensor network energy management. |
