On the Applicability of Design Techniques, Process Models, and Estimating Techniques as Used in Traditional Software Engineering to Multimedia Projects |

Description:
This thesis seeks to examine the differences between use of design techniques, process models, and estimating techniques in two related applications of IT, "conventional" software development and multimedia. The intention is to identify the critical elements associated with the production process of multimedia applications. Due to the diversity of the disciplines that interact within the multimedia creative process, existing research has discovered that a singular defined method is difficult to define and apply. This investigation seeks to explore the processes that existed in the disciplines involved prior to the introduction of multimedia techniques in order to establish which practices have been retained and which have been cast aside. By then comparing and contrasting the methods used in the various multimedia application areas it is hoped that a generalised model will be discovered and its variations detailed. This would impact on methods for estimating production time and associated cost, and modelling techniques for capturing design. We expect this also to have relevance to Time to Market strategies, as these are important in the internet environment. An expected outcome of this work is new approaches to development in both areas, using improved models and techniques. |
