Description:
Modern computer graphics are built around the ability to create realistic two-dimensional images of three-dimensional worlds. As the demand for sophisticated realism in computer graphics increases, more advanced rendering techniques and hardware are required to generate high quality images in as close to real time as possible. Movie studios and professional graphics artists make use of advanced rendering techniques such as ray tracing to achieve high quality graphics but the performance of these methods has limited their use outside these professional environments. Mainstream uptake of these high quality rendering techniques will not occur until the time taken to generate high quality images is decreased to acceptable levels.
Investigation of new and improved methods to solve the illumination equation and to increase the performance of high quality rendering techniques is required. By developing new and faster rendering algorithms that utilise special purpose hardware architectures, these advanced rendering techniques could become suitable alternatives to existing mainstream rendering methods. The average graphics user would be able to take advantage of high quality rendering while professional graphics artists could generate highest quality images with decreased render times and consequently decreased costs.
