Department of Computer Science & Computer Engineering

SPRIG Students The Department of Computer Science & Computer Engineering has an outstanding record of research achievement, and a wide variety of research interests. Currently, we have 5 research groups in Computer Science and Computer Engineering. Major research programs cover areas:

  • Bioinformatics and Biometric Security
  • Computational Intelligence and Multimedia Technologies
  • Databases and Information Systems
  • Pervasive Computing and Network
  • Software Engineering

The Department collaborates with a range of research institutions and industries, both in Australia and globally. La Trobe University offers an extensive scholarship and candidature program for postgraduate students who are undertaking higher degrees by research. There are currently 96 PhD Students in the Department. The Department is well equipped with state of the art computing and infrastructure facilities and operates from a modern information technology and computer science. Members of the department are also part of the ARC Centre of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Auto CRC.

Research degrees provide a thorough training in a chosen area of study in research techniques and methods and result in a piece of original research presented by means of a thesis. Strong emphasis is placed on publications in the best journals and leading international conferences. The Department participates in a number of collaborative research projects with government departments and industry partners and receives large research grants. Over the years, the Department has produced a large number of Ph.D. graduates: comparatively high among Australian Universities. Graduates of our department are now on the faculties of universities world wide as well as holding key positions in industry globally.
