Honours Master Degree
The minimum entry requirement is completion of a Bachelor Degree in a cognate discipline with at least a credit average in subjects in the final year. Students enrolled in an associated Master by Coursework or Professional Master by Coursework with a good academic record may be invited to transfer to the Honours Master.
8 -24 months. The Honours Master Degree will be an additional six months of full-time study or equivalent (60 credit points) relative to the associated Master by Coursework or Professional Master by Coursework.
Learning outcomes (AQF)
Characteristics of learning outcomes at this level include the mastery or overview of the relevant field of study or area of professional practice. The emphasis for the Honours Master Degree includes the acquisition or enhancement of specific professional or vocational skills and knowledge with a thesis component.
A graduate of an Honours Master Degree program is able to:
- provide appropriate evidence of advanced knowledge about a specialist body of theoretical and applied topics;
- demonstrate a high order of skill in analysis, critical evaluation and/or professional application through the planning and execution of project work; and
- demonstrate creativity and flexibility in the application of knowledge and skills to new situations, to solve complex problems and to think rigorously and independently.
Exit standard (AQF)
An Honours Master degree normally consists of material at fourth or fifth-year level, designed to strengthen and deepen students conceptual thinking and theoretical understanding of the discipline and to improve the capacity for critical reflection. It includes a thesis of 10000 - 20000 words.
Students who choose to exit without completing the thesis component, may be awarded the associated Master by Coursework or Professional Master Degree. The Honours Master Degree may serve for the purposes of seeking entry to PhD or Master Research candidature.
Successful candidates are normally awarded a Master of (specialisation) with Honours, Master of (field of study) with Honours or Master of (field of study) Studies/Science with Honours. The latter may be used if it is wished to differentiate the degree from a research Master degree.
