Why research Visual arts?
We can supervise work in animation, ceramics, design, drawing, illustration, painting, photography and printmaking. Our academics are practising artists, theorists and designers. Studios, workshops and laboratories on campus are supported by technicians. The La Trobe Visual Arts Centre in Bendigo provides a focus for postgraduate studies, with lectures, seminars and exhibitions of emerging and research-based art. Your research program will usually involve an exhibition and a written thesis.

- Honours degree of at least four years' full-time duration or Master's preliminary qualification, with at least an H2A result in the relevant discipline; or Pass degree and additional qualifications or demonstrated research skills or publications, or equivalent, approved by the University's Higher Degrees Committee.

- This is a studio-based program with associated theoretical studies; it brings candidates to a high level of practice and informed critical aesthetic judgement in visual arts or design. Discipline offerings by campus include: Bendigo: ceramics, drawing, graphic design, illustration, painting, photography, and printmaking.
Mildura: ceramics, drawing, graphic design, illustration, painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture. - Prerequisite
- Honours degree in appropriate discipline, or equivalent.
- Additional information
- Candidates' progress is reviewed annually. Final assessment of the thesis is by two or more examiners, of whom at least one is external. The thesis must demonstrate competence in conducting and reporting research work under supervision, and mastery of the chosen topic at a high level.

How to apply
You can apply for research candidature at any time. However, applications for research scholarships close on 31 October.
To apply for Master's candidature, you need an Honours degree or Master's Preliminary. For Doctoral (PhD) candidature, you need a Master's or a Bachelor's degree with Honours, usually with a result of at least H2A.
Before applying, it's best to contact a potential academic supervisor and receive in-principle approval for your topic.
Once you've done this, you can download an application form [PDF 1.02Mb] and submit it to La Trobe's Research Services office.
Fees and scholarships
Research degrees are funded by the Commonwealth Government via the Research Training Scheme (RTS) (fees may apply to some components of some Professional Doctorates).
