The course

The Master of Information and Communication Technology equips you with the advanced skills and knowledge you need to launch a global career in ICT.

This course is made up of a combination of core subjects and electives.

In first year, you'll work with a small team to plan and develop an industry-focused software or IT project. You'll also choose from a large selection of computer science, electronic engineering and networking subjects to complete your study in two years (standard duration) or 18 months (accelerated).

First year core subjects

Elective subjects

Complete 135 points worth of electives including at least one Level 4 computer science subject. The following is a small sample of available electives. For a full list see the handbook.

Academic entry requirements

An Australian Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, computer engineering or communication/telecommunication engineering, or approved international equivalent.

English language requirements

Inside look

Maria Camila Gonzalez Yanez is a Master of Information and Communication Technology student at La Trobe. Maria highly recommends the industry project component of the course. 'It gives you a better understanding and a more profound understanding of the different topics that you have in IT, so you get into networking or software. You get more hands-on experience.'

The Hooper Memorial Student Project Seminar is an opportunity for undergraduate and postgraduate ICT students to share their work and network with industry people. Maria recently presented her industry project at the Hooper Seminar and welcomed the opportunity to connect with people in the industry.

Feature staff

Dr Torab Torabi

Dr Torabi is a Senior Lecturer and industry project coordinator at La Trobe. He has over seven years' industry experience (including his work with General Electric Company) and has co-authored more than forty journal and conference papers in software engineering and mobile computing.

He has supervised and coordinated more than 50 research projects including supervision of many postgraduate students. Dr Torabi was received both the Vice Chancellor's and the Dean's Awards for Teaching Excellence in 2007.

Professor Yi-Ping Phoebe Chen

Professor Yi-Ping Phoebe Chen is Professor, Chair and Director of Research with the Department of Computer Science and Computer Engineering at La Trobe. Her research interests include artificial intelligence, bioinformatics, computational intelligence and more. To date, she has secured over 30 research grants worth over $8 million and has over 200 publications.

Her current research project, Advanced analytics utilising conjoint mining of data and content with applications in business, bio-medicine and electrical power systems is funded by an ARC Discovery Project grant.
