Meet our student
Eddie La Marca
Course of study:
Doctor of Philosophy (Genetics)
I completed my undergraduate studies with a keen interest in genetics and then undertook an Honours year under the supervision of Dr Greg Somers. I am now completing a PhD.
My research uses the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster to examine stem cells in living tissues, rather than the Petri dish. I am currently conducting a genetic screen to identify genes involved in the regulation of stem cells in Drosophila, and when I find new genes, I will elucidate how they function and contribute to proper stem cell development. This research is supported by the David Myers Scholarship, which I received for the high mark I obtained in my Honours year.
I'm studying at the Melbourne Campus in Bundoora and I think the Campus resources are excellent; I've certainly never gone wanting for anything.
I find the atmosphere of the Department of Genetics to be extremely conducive to productivity; it is both relaxed and friendly, and is populated by ferociously intelligent and like-minded individuals. It's a close-knit community, and I'm overjoyed to be a part of it. I think that La Trobe is a learning hub of the highest order, and I try my best to reach the lofty goals I believe my course and the University demands of me.
