Why do research in Speech pathology?
We undertake quality research in the field of human communication and swallowing. Research studies advance scientific knowledge and contributes to professional practice, educational programs, policy and service delivery. Many staff in HCS have an international reputation for research into communication and swallowing disorders. Current research topics include; stuttering; rehabilitation of dysphagia (swallowing disorder) in adults; better managing of people with complex communication needs; improving communication skills in male to female transsexuals; aphasia.

How to apply
You can apply for research candidature at any time. However, applications for research scholarships close on 31 October.
To apply for Master's candidature, you need an Honours degree or Master's Preliminary. For Doctoral (PhD) candidature, you need a Master's or a Bachelor's degree with Honours, usually with a result of at least H2A.
Before applying, it's best to contact a potential academic supervisor and receive in-principle approval for your topic.
Once you've done this, you can download an application form [PDF 1.02Mb] and submit it to La Trobe's Research Services office.
Fees and scholarships
Research degrees are funded by the Commonwealth Government via the Research Training Scheme (RTS) (fees may apply to some components of some Professional Doctorates).
There are a range of scholarships available for local students.

Research – what to expect
We conduct, facilitate and promote excellent and relevant research that advances knowledge in the health and human sciences and contributes to scientific understanding, professional practice, educational programs, policy and service delivery. You will engage with some of the most important health issues facing Australia and the region. Our breadth of focus and depth of expertise create the potential for new questions, new approaches and new solutions to problems.
Postgraduate seminar series
You must attend at least six seminars in our Postgraduate Seminar Series and present one seminar. Full-time students must attend at least six of the School Research Colloquia Series and part-time students at least four.
Finding a supervisor
One of the most important aspects of your research study will be finding a supervisor in Speech pathology.
