Why study Special education?

The Master of Special Education is for graduate teachers who would like to gain the knowledge and skills for work in special education. We facilitate professional knowledge to improve learning outcomes for students who experience learning difficulties or disabilities. You may complete subjects in this program online, on campus or at summer school intensives.

Career opportunities

Graduates are prepared for any school position related to student administration, student welfare, social justice, supporting students with disabilities or the differentiated curriculum. Roles include year level coordinators disability or integration advisor, student welfare advisor, transition coordinator, behaviour management advisor and learning support teachers.

It provides students with an understanding of issues in the lives of people with special education needs, and is suitable for integration teachers and other special education roles (except in the field of hearing impairment). It covers topics such as teaching students with Autism, multiple disabilities and communication, wellbeing and responsiveness, challenging behaviours and difference, and an integrated special education practicum.

It is designed to equip students with knowledge and skills in all areas of special education, ranging from students-at-risk to family and school relationships to communication systems and emerging technologies and intervention programs.

Bachelor of Education, Honours degree, four-year teaching qualification or specialised Graduate Diploma.

Fees and scholarships

Postgraduate coursework programs are either:

  • Fee-paying (where you pay the full cost of the course). FEE-HELP is available.
  • CSP (Commonwealth Supported Place), subsidised by the Commonwealth Government where you pay a contribution towards course costs. HECS-HELP is available.

Students enrolled for certain postgraduate coursework programs may be eligible for student income support.

Academic entry requirements
An Australian Bachelor's degree teaching qualification or approved international equivalent.
Special requirements
Applicants must provide an original Criminal Record Check and a Working with Children Check card. The Criminal Record Check must not be more than 12 months old, and from any jurisdiction in which the applicant has resided for 12 months or more (after the age of 18 years) in the past 10 years. For courses that require a Working with Children check card from Australian authorities, students must obtain the check card before commencing the course. The Working With Children application is available through Australia Post offices.
