Why study Special education?
We train skilled teachers in the professional, discipline knowledge related to inclusion, diversity, disability and school responsiveness. Learn how to identify the special needs of students with a range of learning difficulties, achieve maximum learning outcomes for all students, change approach to suit the learning needs of students, develop positive communication skills in students, teach social skills and build resilience through a positive, supportive and inclusive classroom. You may teach in primary or special education.
Career opportunities
Graduates are qualified to teach in a primary school or special education settings in Australia and overseas (subject to registration). This degree is accredited by the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) and articulates with the Master of Special Education. Career pathways for the special educator include social justice and student welfare positions, learning support, curriculum advisor, year level coordinator and school administrator. Graduates may also find work in disability services, children's services and community services.

- Early childhood is an educational category covering infants and children from birth to 12 years. This course is for people interested in early childhood education and teaching in early learning centres, kindergartens and primary schools. It focuses on early childhood and primary education, but students can also study towards a qualification in special education.
- Prerequisite
- VCE Units 3 & 4: study score of at least 30 in English (ESL) or 25 in any other English.
VCE Units 1 & 2: two units General Mathematics or Mathematical Methods (CAS) or Units 3 & 4 Mathematics (any). - Year 12 and non-year 12 extra requirements
- Non-Year 12 selection may be based on ATAR, VTAC Personal History online, GPA, STAT Multiple Choice.
Non-Year 12 applicants must complete and submit a VTAC Personal History online if they wish other information to be considered during the selection process. This may include information such as work experience or reasons for applying. Applicants may wish to provide other documentation in support of their application.

- Consideration is given to relevant paid or unpaid work experience, Certificate 2 or 3 in Childcare, and Rural and Regional Student Access Scheme criteria. Re-ranking is also based on performance in English (any).

- To be able to legally teach in Victorian schools, students must do a course that makes them eligible for teacher registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT). This course aims to give students the qualification necessary to register with VIT and teach in primary and secondary schools, with an extra option for a qualification in special education. Graduates are highly respected in Australia and internationally for their detailed knowledge of curriculum and highly developed teaching skills.

- VCE Units 3 & 4: study score of at least 30 in English (ESL), or 25 in any other English.

- Guaranteed Entry - Year 12 applicants only. Applicants with an ATAR of 68 or more will be made a first round offer. Applicants whose ATAR is below 68 will be considered for a Commonwealth Supported Place through normal selection processes.

- A study score of at least 20 in LOTE (any) facilitates up to 3 additional aggregate points. Relevant paid or unpaid work experience is also considered, as is performance in English (any). Consideration is also given to Special Entry Access Scheme (SEAS) criteria; and a regional bonus may apply.
