Primary teaching
Why study Primary teaching?
We offer the Bachelor of Teaching (Primary), the Bachelor of Education (allows for primary, primary/secondary and primary/special education specialisations) and specialised programs in physical education, health, student welfare and social work, outreach and community education, and early childhood education. Our courses combine current theoretical knowledge with practical teaching experience. Gain skills and experience in planning, teaching and observing the development and learning of children, and working in teams and with parents. You will experience three different teaching environments in the first year of study. You will take two three-year sequences focusing on literacy and numeracy as well as a specific discipline of study. This approach focuses on best career outcomes and gives you an edge in applying for teaching roles.
Career opportunities
Graduates are prepared for work in government, Catholic and independent schools nationally and overseas (subject to registration). You may also work in human services, training, children's services, leadership-related areas, media and service industries. Specialists in outreach and community education find positions as student welfare teachers in disadvantaged schools or teachers in drug rehabilitation programs, detention facilities for youth, council outreach programs and centres with programs for disengaged youth. Graduates in early childhood education may find work in childcare facilities, kindergarten and early learning centres. Our teaching courses are accredited with the Victorian Institute of Teaching.
