Why study Primary and secondary teaching?
Honours provides students with the opportunity to enhance research skills, writing skills, networking skills, problem solving skills and inter and intra personal skills. This training provides a solid basis for students who wish to progress to postgraduate study and can also facilitate the gaining of employment. The advanced skills you will gain as a result of completing Honours are highly sought after by employers and will be advantageous when seeking work in a competitive job market.
Career opportunities
There is an increasing demand for teachers and educators. You are eligible for registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) and can seek employment nationally and overseas (subject to registration). Graduates may also find work in children's services, education leadership-related areas, government, private sector, media and service industries.

Structure
Coursework
Students complete 90 credit points of coursework subjects:
- EDU4RMA Education Research Methods (30 cp)
- EDU4PWT Professional work of teachers (15 cp)
- EDU4SNL Supporting the needs of learners (15 cp)
- EDU4RA Assessment and reporting (15 cp)
- EDU4TT Transitions to teaching (15 cp)
Thesis
Students complete a 15,000 word research thesis. The writing of a thesis is carried out under the guidance of a supervisor. The thesis is designed to test your potential to conduct individual academic research, and conceive and carry out a research plan, to analyse and interpret data, to construct arguments, and produce a substantial piece of work.
Entry requirements
To qualify for entry into Bachelor of Education (Honours) students must achieve a weighted average mark of 80 throughout their undergraduate studies.
How to apply
Local students
If you are interested in undertaking an Honours year in Education, you should:
- Discuss ideas for a thesis topic with your lecturers and tutors
- Secure the agreement of a supervisor
- Apply in writing for admission by the first Monday in November in the year prior to starting Honours. Your letter should include:
- a 200-300 word abstract of your thesis research topic (this is not binding)
- a statement of results
- your intention to complete the course part-time or full-time
