Course description
This course provides students with the skills and knowledge to prevent and treat disorders of the foot and ankle, and leads to professional registration as a podiatrist. As well as learning the complex assessment and management skills used in podiatric practice, students learn to treat patients with complex medical conditions and to work in different areas of podiatry - such as paediatrics, surgery and sports injuries.

The Department of Podiatry conducts its own clinic at the Melbourne campus, and students are directly involved in the treatment of patients. They gain further clinical experience through external placement at hospitals, health centres and private practice under the supervision of a clinician, in both years of the course.

Prerequisite
Applicants should hold a relevant Bachelor's degree or equivalent from an approved institution, with a grade point average of at least H2A (70% or above) in their most recently completed university degree of relevance to the application. Relevant degrees include; Health Science (in relevant streams such as Allied Health or Anatomy & Physiology), Medicine, Pre-Medicine, Medical or Biomedical Science, Nursing and Dentistry degrees which were awarded within the last five (5) years. Applicants will be selected on academic merit and the degree to which pre-requisite capabilities can be demonstrated. Professional experience in related fields will be considered. English language requirements apply.
Entrance into the Podiatry Graduate Entry Masters (GEMs) program requires pre-existing knowledge, skills and attributes in the following core areas:
- Human anatomy of the lower extremity (in particular the foot)
- Human physiology
- Human pathology
- Microbiology
- Pharmacology

Indicative (2013): $23,600 per 120 credit points
Costs
Instruments (A$600) and safety equipment are required in first year; prices vary. Students must purchase a Podiatry Department shirt to wear for
clinical activities (A$60), as well as a name tag (A$15) and approved leather
shoes. Proof of current immunisation and National Police Check (A$15) may
be required for some placements.
Accommodation costs for clinical placements vary according to venue,
and not all students incur the same costs. Students can buy equipment, materials etc, from any supplier and these items remain students personal property.
Additional information
All students enrolled in this program are required to successfully complete bridging studies in the summer semester prior to commencing the course. Cost and dates are to be confirmed.

The degree enables professional registration in Australia and New Zealand. Overseas registration criteria vary from country to country.

Postgraduate coursework programs are either:

  • Fee-paying (where you pay the full cost of the course). FEE-HELP is available.
  • CSP (Commonwealth Supported Place), subsidised by the Commonwealth Government where you pay a contribution towards course costs. HECS-HELP is available.

Students enrolled for certain postgraduate coursework programs may be eligible for student income support.

Fees are indicative only and set at 120 credit points per course, unless otherwise stated, and may vary depending on the number of credit points in which students enrol. Some courses may vary in credit point load and fees will be adjusted accordingly.

Your study experience

Podiatry placements

We have our own clinic at the Melbourne campus where you will be directly involved in the treatment of patients. Further clinical experience is gained through external placement in hospitals, health centres and private practice under the supervision of a clinician. Placements are available in metropolitan Melbourne, rural and regional Victoria, interstate and overseas. You must do placements in Melbourne and in rural or regional Victoria.
