The Outdoor and Environmental Education unit in Bendigo has an international reputation and is the largest dedicated provider of outdoor and environmental education in the world. Graduates with limited experience in outdoor or environmental education study our intensive graduate certificate program that allows you to choose subjects that you need. If you have demonstrated expertise in outdoor or environmental education, our Masters program allows you to develop expertise in a new area or add depth to a specialist area.
Career opportunities
Graduates are prepared for careers in school-based outdoor education or in school-owned residential camps. You may also provide outdoor and environmental education services to schools or work in community environmental education or as a national park guide. Further study may lead to work in remote schools and emergency services or as an adventure guide or researcher.

- For graduates with little or no experience in outdoor or environmental education, this course offers an intensive program and an opportunity to choose subjects according to individual needs and interests. Graduates with demonstrated expertise in outdoor or environmental education may tailor the course to extend their expertise into new areas, or add depth of knowledge in a specialist area. The course includes both the theoretical depth and integrated practical work for which the Outdoor Education program is internationally renowned.
- Prerequisite
- Bachelor's degree or diploma, or equivalent. Applicants also need camping skills, self-sufficiency in activities such as bushwalking, cross-country skiing, rock-climbing, and flat-water canoeing, and a medical certificate substantiating their ability to handle strenuous activity in remote areas.
- Fee amount
- Indicative (2013): $8045 for 60 credit points.
- Costs
- Students will need to allow A$1500 - A$2000 to purchase suitable outdoor field equipment such as a sleeping bag and wet weather gear. These items may be purchased from any supplier and will be the students' personal property. Students are encouraged to bring any camping gear they may already have and to wait until they have commenced the course before purchasing any new gear.

- This course aims to give students with limited experience in outdoor or environmental education the opportunity to choose subjects according to their needs. Applicants with an outdoor or environmental education degree can extend their expertise into a new area, or add depth of knowledge in a specialist area.
A wide range of subjects is available, including Outdoor Education Experience, Outdoor Education Concepts, Bush Environments, River Environments, Winter Alpine Environments, Rock Environments, and Education and Sustainability. The course includes both the theoretical depth and integrated practical work for which the La Trobe outdoor education program is internationally-renowned. - Prerequisite
- Bachelor's degree, Diploma, or equivalent, and skills in camping and activities such as rock-climbing or flat-water canoeing. Applicants must also provide a medical certificate substantiating their ability to handle strenuous activity in remote areas.

- This course is an advanced program intended for professionals in outdoor and environmental education and related fields. It takes an international perspective, and considers outdoor and environmental education in regional contexts. Students are encouraged to take some subjects with partner institutions overseas for elective credit.
- Prerequisite
- Applicants with a three year Bachelor degree or equivalent tertiary qualification are eligible for entry to the two-year program (240 credit points).
Direct entry to second year (120 credit points) may be offered to applicants who can demonstrate academic achievement at a level that indicates likely success at Masters level, and have:
. research training or experience, and
. a three-year degree in any field and a Graduate Diploma in a cognate field, or
. a four-year degree in a cognate field, or
. a three-year degree in a cognate field and an approved fourth year of study in a relevant discipline. - Fee amount
- Indicative (2012): $14,950 per 120 credit points.

Fees and scholarships
Postgraduate coursework programs are either:
- Fee-paying (where you pay the full cost of the course). FEE-HELP is available.
- CSP (Commonwealth Supported Place), subsidised by the Commonwealth Government where you pay a contribution towards course costs. HECS-HELP is available.
Students enrolled for certain postgraduate coursework programs may be eligible for student income support.
