Why study Middle years teaching?

We offer the Graduate Diploma (Middle Years) degree for those wanting to specialise in educating the middle years (Years 5 to 10) in schools. This course is offered flexibly from our Shepparton campus and enables you to access the very latest theoretical and practical knowledge. The course allows students to study predominantly online, with 5 weeks on campus study, in addition to practical placements at a location you can nominate.

Career opportunities

There is an increasing demand for teachers and educators. You are eligible for registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) and can seek employment nationally in both primary and secondary schools and may be able to apply to work in some countries overseas (subject to registration).

Roles for graduates may include becoming a primary or secondary teacher, middle years teacher, along with working in other educational environments. Graduates may also find work in children's services, education leadership-related areas, government, private sector, media and service industries.

Applicants with appropriate undergraduate sub-majors/majors may also be eligible to teach Years 11 and 12.

Graduate Diploma in Education (Middle Years) continued… Course description This course is suitable for prospective teachers who want to teach in both primary and secondary schools with a special focus on the middle years (Years 5 to Year 10). Applicants with appropriate undergraduate sub-majors/majors are also eligible to teach Years 11 and 12. Students interested in working with young adolescents (age 11 to 16 years) will be well suited to this course. Content includes theoretical studies in teaching, learning and classroom management, and teaching methodology studies in curriculum areas relevant to primary and lower-to-middle years of secondary schooling. The course focuses on specialist training in teaching and learning approaches for adolescents and disengaged youth. Languages Other Than English (LOTE) is available as a non-core option at an additional cost. Prerequisite Bachelor degree or equivalent, with double major, major or sub-major sequences in discipline studies relevant to the post-primary curriculum. It is desirable that applicants are qualified to teach in at least two post-primary disciplines acceptable to the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT); however, applicants with discipline studies in only one curriculum area are eligible to apply. Additional costs Applicants who choose LOTE as a non-core option will be required to enrol in an additional 15 credit points, which means students will pay an extra A$1460 (2012 fee, subject to change). Master of Teaching (P-12) continued… Course description This course is a professional qualification designed to prepare teachers to teach in primary and secondary schools in all areas of state and Australian curriculum in the years of compulsory schooling. It provides a recognised teaching qualification for registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) and therefore in other states and territories. The program includes detailed consideration of state and national core curriculum theory, teaching methodologies, and classroom management. Students undertake 60 days of supervised practice in primary and secondary schools and at least 10 days of supervised fieldwork in a range of educational contexts. In the final semester students undertake a professional attachment in a school and complete an action research project. The course is taught through a blended learning approach, combining 21 days of on-campus study in four short blocks spread over the year, guided online teaching and learning activities, and in-school teaching practice placements. Prerequisite Approved Bachelor's degree or equivalent with double major, major or sub-major in studies relevant to the post-primary curriculum. To meet schools' expectations and ensure maximum career opportunities, it is desirable that graduates are qualified to teach in at least two post-primary subject disciplines, with at least one to VCE level and at least one for teaching Years 7-10, acceptable to the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT). Applicants with discipline studies in only one post-primary curriculum area are eligible to apply. Postgraduate coursework programs are either:

Fee-paying (where you pay the full cost of the course). FEE-HELP is available.
CSP (Commonwealth Supported Place), subsidised by the Commonwealth Government where you pay a contribution towards course costs. HECS-HELP is available.

Students enrolled for certain postgraduate coursework programs may be eligible for student income support.

Special requirements Applicants must provide an original National Police Check which is not more than a year old, from any jurisdiction in which the applicant has resided for 12 months or more (after the age of 18 years) in the past 10 years. Students must apply for the Working with Children Check (WWC) upon course commencement. WWC applications are available through Australia Post offices.
