Course description
La Trobe's Bachelor of Arts has always been an ideal avenue for developing strong analytical and communications skills and broad-ranging knowledge suited to careers in many fields. Our restructured BA aims to give you a qualification delivering real world skills to adapt to the changing world. By also choosing the Work Ready program you can add to the standard curriculum by taking work ready subjects designed specifically to prepare you for the workforce.

Students can choose up to two subjects towards a major in the first year, three in the second year and three in the third year.
You can choose a minor specialisation to develop a secondary area of expertise. Electives are available in a range of disciplines in the humanities and social sciences and also in other faculty areas (subject to prerequisites). Major areas of study are listed below:

La Trobe's Bachelor of Arts has always been an ideal avenue for developing strong analytical and communications skills and broad-ranging knowledge suited to careers in many fields. Our restructured BA aims to give you a qualification delivering real world skills to adapt to the changing world. By also choosing the Work Ready program you can add to the standard curriculum by taking work ready subjects designed specifically to prepare you for the workforce.

Students can choose up to two subjects towards a major in the first year, three in the second year and three in the third year.
You can choose a minor specialisation to develop a secondary area of expertise. Electives are available in a range of disciplines in the humanities and social sciences and also in other faculty areas (subject to prerequisites). Major areas of study are listed below:

Contemporary journalism encompasses many formats and genres in print, broadcast and online media, offering many career options. Whether students are interested in reporting on/writing about politics, technology, the arts or another specialist field, this course aims to hone skills in research, writing, editing and media production in order to assist students in stepping into their dream careers. It also aims to provide a thorough understanding of the media's role and operations, including media ethics.

Every component of the curriculum is grounded in industry practice, and all lecturers have extensive industry experience. Course description
The expansion of media industries around the globe means there are more jobs than ever before in traditional and new media fields. Whether students wish to work in creative or technical areas of film, television, radio/audio, or digital media arts, this course aims to give students all the entry-level development and production skills needed. It also covers the practical operation and cultural role of the media and trains students in research and issues analysis.

Students can choose from a wide range of electives to help develop strong contextual knowledge of the media. Industry internships are available to help students experience industry workplaces and start their own professional networks.

The growth of internet and social media communication alongside traditional media has made communication strategy critically important for organisations around the world.

This industry-focused degree provides a thorough practical grounding in the realities and challenges of public relations. With practical insights into professional communication careers, this course offers training in developing and implementing ethical and effective communication strategies.

Students will learn how to analyse and understand public relations, advertising, marketing and journalism and how they combine to shape public attitudes and actions. Students will also have the opportunity to undertake internships as part of their course, gaining valuable experience and a network of contacts.

The course provides an outstanding grounding for careers in public relations and marketing communications. Accreditation with the Public Relations Institute of Australia (PRIA) is currently being negotiated.

Media studies placement opportunities

A media internship (MST3INT) is available to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Media Studies and the Bachelor of Journalism. In this unit, students will develop contacts with, and work in, a media organisation. Students will develop an understanding of issues internal to the organisation such as its goals, structure, management and work practices.
