Course structure

Core and elective subjects

The La Trobe MBA is made up of 10 compulsory core subjects, two electives and two professional placements. If you choose the full-time program, you can complete the program in three semesters (18 months). If you choose to study part time, you can complete the program within four years (due to visa restrictions, part-time enrolment is not available to international students).

As part of your studies, you'll create an ePortfolio that will contribute to gaining future employment. The subjects allow you to reflect on how you can apply what you've learned in your professional role.

Values, Ethics and Diversity in Organisations

Develop your critical thinking, writing and research skills to contribute to an informed analysis of values, ethics and diversity in contemporary organisations. The concept of workplace diversity is introduced and evaluated with particular regard to the most pressing demographic issues in both Australian and global contexts. Through the use of ethical theories, this subject develops your abilities to reframe organisational practices and include ethical considerations in organisational decision making. Frameworks and tools for managing diversity and business ethics are introduced and critically evaluated. This subject is designed to meet principles 1-4 of the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME).

Responsible Leadership

You will be introduced to leadership models and competencies to develop the skills and theoretical knowledge to become a responsible and effective leader. Working individually and with other students, you will analyse leaders in contemporary practice, within the context of dynamic, challenging and often ambiguous organisational circumstances. In addition, you will reflect on and analyse your own leadership practice as a responsible leader, assessing your strengths and identifying areas where you can be even more effective.

Corporate Governance

Numerous corporate failures and environmental disasters in recent times have provided a surge of interest in ensuring companies work to reflect regulatory standards and society norms. You’ll be able to add value to your organisations through your understanding of corporate governance in a global context and of the role of the board of directors and management. Working both independently, and with others, you will learn about corporate governance through solving business problems and develop critical-thinking and problem-solving skills required to add value to organisations.

Professional skill development

Boardroom Simulation
The Boardroom Simulation is the final element of the MBA, bringing all of the course components together and facilitating a transition into your professional career. It allows you to stretch yourself in a challenging team-based environment that reflects a true-to-life workplace. You’ll develop a comprehensive business strategy while you broaden and deepen your leadership and managerial strengths and capabilities.

ePortfolio
The ePortfolio is a core component of the MBA’s commitment to the development of your personal and professional skills. By the end of the course, you will have a complete portfolio of demonstrated managerial and leadership competencies for career advancement. Active career planning is a central feature of this exercise. You are encouraged to reflect on the connections between your past, present and desired future skills and the competencies required to achieve your career success. The ePortfolio will be submitted and assessed as part of the Boardroom Simulation.
