Our postgraduate program in linguistics caters for both graduates new to the discipline or those wishing from extend their advanced professional qualification in some aspect of language or literacy development to an increased focus on research across the range of concerns related to language in applied contexts. We also offer postgraduate programs for those wishing to extend their sign language knowledge in to a research focus.

Career opportunities

Graduates of the Masters course will be equipped to take positions of responsibility in the planning, administration and delivery of language and literacy programs and will be qualified to undertake applied research relevant to their professional responsibilities and interests. Those new to the discipline can explore career opportunities in audiology, publishing, education, foreign affairs, immigration, journalism, librarianship, lexicography, sign language teaching, speech pathology, speech technology, translation.

This program leads students from an advanced professional qualification in an area of language and literacy to an increased focus on research across the range of concerns related to language in applied contexts. It is available by coursework, a combination of coursework and a minor thesis, or by research. Majors include Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), Languages Other than English (LOTE) Teaching, and Intercultural Communication.
Prerequisite
Four-year degree in related discipline, or Bachelor degree and approved fourth year of study. Those with a Bachelor degree can apply to a two-year full-time equivalent program (a Graduate Diploma in a related area) and continue to the Master's in second year. Course description
Two specialisations are offered in this degree. Linguistics is suitable for students with a good working knowledge of AUSLAN or another sign language, who wish to pursue research in the area. The course covers studies in linguistics and sociolinguistics of sign language, Deaf culture and Deaf community (including Deaf history), and a detailed study of the methodologies appropriate to the study of non-literate languages and minority cultures. Interpreting covers three key areas: - Theory and practice of interpreting, focusing on issues such as simultaneous and consecutive interpreting, note-taking and contrastive linguistics of signed languages (e.g. AUSLAN) and English, and ethics and the professional code of conduct. - Cultural studies, through which students develop a good general knowledge of current affairs and a clear understanding of interaction procedures, particularly in meetings and conferences. - Research methodology, which introduces students to appropriate methodologies for studying interpreting of non-literate languages, and involves a small research project.
Prerequisite
Candidates with a three-year Bachelor degree are eligible for entry to a two-year program (240 credit points). Applicants to the one-year program (120 credit points) or to research candidature should have a Bachelor of Education, Honours degree, or specialised Graduate Diploma from a recognised university or institution.
