Our postgraduate program provides health professionals with an interest in developing health promotion in their current work the skills to support a change in career. This may include professionals from community health services, local government, drug and alcohol services, aged care, women's health, acute hospital units, acute hospital/community liaison and other health sector agencies. Develop skills in health promotion practice, health promotion planning and delivery, and inter-organisational work with partners.

Career opportunities

Health promotion and disease prevention are important elements in the Victorian and Australian health systems. Community based services and local government in particular will be required to enhance your work in health promotion and disease prevention.

Course description
This course provides students with the skills and knowledge to conduct applied research in health or community services settings (thesis stream) and to develop, implement and evaluate health-related programs and services. It offers opportunities to learn more about a variety of specialities in the health field, to strengthen analytical skills and to consider furthering knowledge through research. The course aims to meet the needs of health professionals who have assumed or are likely to assume high-level responsibility for coordination and management of these programs and services.
Prerequisite
Admission requirements vary depending on your choice of major. Normally, applicants should have a three-year undergraduate degree in health sciences or a related field, and at least two years' professional experience in the health or related sector. Applicants without formal qualifications but with relevant experience and skills should discuss their eligibility with the course coordinator.

Course description
This course introduces the theory of health promotion practice and applies it to palliative care. Students have the opportunity to examine connections and make links between policy, organisation and practice in health promotion and in palliative care, and to develop skills for interventions at each of these levels. The overall objective of the course is to develop leaders with ideas for innovative practices in health promoting palliative care. Please note that where class attendance is required, classes are held at the Melbourne (City) campus. There may be changes to this course in 2011, subject to University approval.

Postgraduate coursework programs are either:

  • Fee-paying (where you pay the full cost of the course). FEE-HELP is available.
  • CSP (Commonwealth Supported Place), subsidised by the Commonwealth Government where you pay a contribution towards course costs. HECS-HELP is available.

English Language Requirements
IELTS Academic - a minimum overall score of 6.5 with no individual band less than 6.0; TOEFL Computer Based - a minimum score of 233 (minimum score of 5 in essay writing); TOEFL Paper Based - a minimum score of 575 with a score of 5 or better in the Test of Written English; TOEFL Internet-based - a minimum score of 88 with no individual score less than 22; La Trobe Melbourne - English for Further Studies Advanced Stage 5B certificate at postgraduate level. Academic entry requirements
Applicants are normally required to hold a three-year undergraduate degree in health sciences or a related field and have at least two years work experience in the health or related sector. Applicants for the health information management major must have a degree or other recognised qualification in health information management.

Additional information
Please note the application closing date for Semester 2 commencement is 9 June 2012. Students with majors in Health Administration and Health Policy start in Semester 1 and 2 (February and July). Health Information Management and Health Research and Evaluation majors have a Semester 1 (February) commencement.
