The era of globalisation increasingly requires people with a legal background to have an understanding of business, including an understanding of the links between major business functions and the legal framework.

The only program of its kind in Australia, the Global Business Law program allows law graduates, certified practicing accountants and non-law graduates to study commercial law in areas of global interest, taught by some of the world's leading jurists. Leading professors, practitioners and in-house counsel from around the world teach innovative subjects in American, European and Asian-Pacific business law. The program responds to areas of topical interest by way of subjects such as Chinese Business Law and Practice, Nanotechnology Law, USA Intellectual Property Law and the like.

This program presents an opportunity for non-lawyers to be equipped with an understanding of domestic and international commercial law in preparation for a career in an international business and legal environment. Subjects are offered in five-day block release mode between teaching period one and teaching period two (June-July) and over summer (Dec-Feb); and are normally assessed by a month-long take-home exam. The International Business program runs during teaching period one (Feb-May) and teaching period two (July-October). The University normally offers an introductory program in teaching period one to assist transition to postgraduate studies.

Professional recognition
The program may be used by overseas lawyers as a vehicle for admission to practice in Victoria (up to 120 credit points and subject to Council of Legal Education ruling, for which the student must apply prior to application for admission). All subjects in the LLM (Global Business Law) are examined by a take home examination.
