As you get started, you'll take an in-depth look at the Australian health system and get a solid grounding in the challenges of the field. You'll learn about financial management and people management, industrial relations, organisational leadership and system leadership.

In your final year, you'll integrate your skills and knowledge. A research or workplace project in health management, public health, health promotion or health policy will form a major part of your final-year studies. This project will see you gaining practical experience through applying analytical and problem-solving strategies to real-world healthcare and public health problems. For many students, this project leads to their promotion or next job.

Drawing from their expertise, our academics will impart the knowledge needed for you to become a leader in the public and private health sectors, in areas such as project management, quality management and the management of particular health professions.

The diverse range of electives allows you to further explore health economics and finance, health law and ethics, and process redesign.

The course is based at the Melbourne city campus and has a flexible subject timetable, so you can balance study with other commitments. We offer evening, block and online study modes so you can choose when and how you study.

Our teaching staff have clinical qualifications in medicine and physiotherapy. They have experience in health management and are leaders in health administration research. Fees amount:
$25,000 per 120 credit points. Commonwealth Supported Places (CSPs) are also available. Please note: CSPs are not available for mid-year entry.

1.5 years full-time (semester 2 commencers only) or 3-5 years part-time (semester 1 or 2 commencers).
Prerequisites:
The minimum entry requirement is successful completion of an Australian Bachelor degree (or its equivalent) and two years professional experience, which can include part-time and volunteer experience. In making an offer to an applicant, the University will give consideration to a range of factors to determine whether an applicant has demonstrated the capacity to work at a Master's level, including academic record, English proficiency, and/or employment experience. Applicants without an undergraduate degree or professional experience may be able to access alternate pathways to postgraduate health administration study. NB: Meeting minimum prerequisites does not guarantee an offer of a place. Entry into all La Trobe courses is based on competitive selection and there may be limited places available.
Professional recognition:
The Master of Health Administration is accredited by the Australasian College of Health Service Management (ACHSM). Graduates of the Master of Health Administration may apply for membership with the ACHSM. Membership may be subject to additional or ongoing requirements beyond completion of the degree. Please contact the relevant professional body for details.
