Choose Master of Biotechnology and Bioinformatics at La Trobe

Biotechnology is one of the fastest-growing areas in science.  As a Biotechnology and Bioinformatics student at La Trobe, you’ll study with industry leaders at a university recognised for its research in molecular science*. You'll also study in Melbourne, an international hub for biotechnology and life sciences.

Students of this course come from a variety of scientific backgrounds including biomedical science, immunology and more. Whether you’re looking to advance your career or prepare for further research, our Master degree offers you the next step.

Our course prepares you in the key elements of biotechnology and the manipulation of molecular biological data. You’ll be exposed to cutting-edge research techniques and laboratory-based learning, so you’ll gain the experience to go on to a career in the international biotechnology industry or a research career via a PhD program.

You’ll carry out a full year of laboratory-based research, spending 25-30 hours in the lab each week – ample opportunity to enhance your practical lab skills.

In first year, you’ll study in small groups to develop the capabilities valued in scientific workplaces worldwide. In the second year, you’ll apply your knowledge and skills by completing a research project. As a result, you’ll enhance your research skills, critical thinking, data analysis and scientific communication skills. Meanwhile, you'll apply industry-standard laboratory techniques, graduating with capabilities valued by industry.

Our onsite biotechnology companies, Hexima and AdAlta, and strong industry connections give you first-rate research and networking opportunities. With access to the world-class La Trobe Institute for Molecular Science (LIMS), you’ll study and conduct research using state-of-the-art equipment.

If you choose not to progress into the second year of the program, you can exit after year one with a Graduate Diploma in Biotechnology and Bioinformatics.

*La Trobe’s research in the fields of microbiology, genetics, and biochemistry and cell biology, has been rated as well above world standard, and our research in medicinal and biomolecular chemistry has been rated above world standard in the 2015 ERA Report.

Jessica Alderton decided to follow her passion for genetics by enrolling in the Master of Biotechnology and Bioinformatics.

She first completed a double arts/science degree, followed by honours in genetics with the Victoria Police. She loved forensics, but missed university life at La Trobe.

As a Master’s student, Jessica has honed her research skills and learnt from industry experts. The course gives her the opportunity to specialise in genetics and gain specialist knowledge to widen her career opportunities.

Jessica says she enjoys studying in a supportive environment with leading academics and practitioners in the field. Jessica hopes to one day undertake a PhD in genetics and use her research to address real-life medical and biological problems. The Master’s course is a pathway to further study and specialisation.

Facility profile

La Trobe Institute for Molecular Science (LIMS)

The La Trobe Institute for Molecular Science (LIMS) is a world hub for molecular science research, drawing together scientists from various disciplines to tackle contemporary issues and solve global problems. The LIMS facility is used by both students and scientists and has contributed to our 2015 ranking as ‘well above world class’ (the best possible rating bestowed by the ERA Australian Research Council) for our research in Microbiology, Biochemistry and Cell Biology.*

The LIMS complex has 56 research and support laboratories, advanced research equipment, a 200-seat auditorium, and over 3,000 square metres of teaching facilities. Around 400 academics, research fellows, postgraduate students and support staff are based at the Institute. LIMS also has a regional node at our Bendigo Campus.

This state-of-the-art facility provides Master of Biotechnology Management students with unrivalled access to researchers in the field so you can learn how business skills apply to a real-world laboratory.

LIMS also has two embedded companies, Hexima and Ad Alta and links to the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Research Institute .

Applicants must have an Australian Bachelor's degree (or international equivalent), containing at least two years (four semesters) of biology, and include the study of at least two semesters of biochemistry, microbiology, immunology, cell biology, genetics or biotechnology at second-year level or above. NB: Meeting minimum prerequisites does not guarantee an offer of a place. Entry into all La Trobe courses is based on competitive selection and there may be limited places available.

La Trobe Melbourne (ELICOS): Completion of the English for Further Studies Advanced Stage 6B at La Trobe Melbourne with minimum 60 per cent overall and 60 per cent in final exam.
