Roles include counsellor, human services officer, school counsellor, relationships counsellor, personnel officer, human resources consultant, human resources development officer, community health care worker and tertiary lecturer.

Career opportunities

Graduates may work in community health, clinics, student counselling, private practice, EAP, consultation and specialist positions. Our course is accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council and you are eligible for national registration as a psychologist and full membership of the Australian Psychological Society (APS). After a further year of supervised professional experience, you are eligible for membership of the APS College of Counselling Psychologists.

Course description
This program aims to produce practitioners who can work competently with clients across the lifespan (in group and individual settings), engage in high levels of reflection in relation to professional practice and make productive
use of clinical supervision. It also aims to demonstrate general knowledge of pharmacological treatment relevant to psychological disorders. The course encompasses interpersonal process, core conflictual schema, psychodynamic systems, communication and developmental perspectives of psychological distress and disorder and its treatment and resolution.

Prerequisite
APAC-accredited fourth year in psychology at an Australian university with A or near-A grade average, or equivalent APS-ratified equivalent.

Indicative (2012): $20,050 per 120 credit points.
Limited Commonwealth Supported Places may also be available.

Postgraduate coursework programs are either:

  • Fee-paying (where you pay the full cost of the course). FEE-HELP is available.
  • CSP (Commonwealth Supported Place), subsidised by the Commonwealth Government where you pay a contribution towards course costs. HECS-HELP is available.

Students enrolled for certain postgraduate coursework programs may be eligible for student income support.

English Language Requirements
IELTS (Academic) score of 7.5 with no individual band score less than 7.0;

TOEFL Paper-based Test - A minimum score of 625 with a score of 6 or more in the Test of Written English;

TOEFL Internet-based Test - A minimum score of 102 with a minimum for SLR 24; W27;

Satisfactory completion of the English for Further Studies Advanced Stage 6B (EFS PG2B 80 per cent) which is available from La Trobe Melbourne. For more information please visit the La Trobe Melbourne website;

English as the language of instruction in tertiary studies may be accepted. Please note: English as the language of instruction in previous study will not be accepted as a basis of admission (English) for courses where the approved test score requirement is above an IELTS 6.5 with no band score lower than 6.0.

Pearson Test of English (Academic) (PTE): minimum score of 76 with no communicative skill score less than 73.

Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE): A grade of A.

or approved international equivalent.
Academic entry requirements
Admission is restricted to people who have satisfactorily completed an Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC)-approved fourth year in psychology at an Australian university at an A or near A Grade average, or approved international equivalent as ratified by the Australian Psychological Society (APS). Applicants are advised to seek ratification of their qualifications with the APS at least six months before the course application deadline of 31 October 2012.
Applicants are ranked on the basis of documented evidence of past academic and professional performance.
Experience in counselling is given consideration in the selection process. In addition, professional references, work experience, and the likelihood of an applicant fulfilling the personal and professional requirements of a program are taken into consideration.
Special requirements
Students are required to obtain a National Police check (A$15.50) and Working With Children (WWC) check (no charge) before undertaking a clinical professional placement. This course has a clinical component. Please check this websitefor more information.

Placements form 25% of our program. You will do at least 133 days of supervised internship that must include at least 300 hours of supervised client contact.
