Course description

This double Master's course is designed for health service professionals who want to expand their career pathway into senior management roles in both public and private sector organisations and who wish to develop comprehensive skills in public health and management.

Course structure

Students complete three semesters of full-time study for the Master of Public (MPH) and two semesters of full-time study for the Master of Health Administration (MHA). In addition, MPH students are eligible for credit for appropriate prior learning and experience, of up to four subjects (one semester equivalent). Part-time study is available only for domestic students. Students need to complete nine subjects (135 credit points) from the existing MHA program and 12 subjects (180 credit points) from the existing MPH program. Students are required to complete compulsory and elective subjects to ensure that essential areas are covered.

Tuition fee (AUD)

Indicative (2009): $14,040 (per 120 credit points)
The University reserves the right to vary fees on an annual basis. Fees will not normally rise above 7% per annum. Should the University decide to increase its fees, that increase will take effect on 1 January of the following year.

Prerequisites

A three-year undergraduate degree and a minimum of two years' professional experience in the health system. Applicants are also required to submit a one-page statement of reasons for study and be supported by two referees. Applicants may be required to participate in an interview.

The program is designed for professionals currently at work in a health services setting, who are seeking to expand their career pathways into senior public health management roles in both public and private sector organisations.

Professional recognition

The MHA is accredited by the Australian College of Health Service Executives and the Royal Australian College of Medical Administrators. The Department of Health & Ageing (DHA) provides part of the funding for the four consortium members who participate together in the teaching of the MPH in Victoria. Consortium members are Monash University, Deakin University, Melbourne University and La Trobe University. The MPH is an internationally recognised professional qualification in public health settings. The double degree program is recognised accordingly.
