Course description

This course of study enables suitably qualified graduates to become instructors in orientation and mobility, whose principle role is to teach people with severe vision impairment to travel safely and independently by foot and public transport. Instructors are required by organisations that provide services to people with vision impairment or other disabilities in orientation and mobility. As well as learning about the theoretical basis of orientation and mobility, instruction methods and program development, students become highly skilled in the techniques of mobility vision impaired.

The University reserves the right to vary fees on an annual basis. Fees will not normally rise above 7% per annum. Should the University decide to increase its fees, that increase will take effect on 1 January of the following year.

Prerequisites

Degree in the health sciences, education or behavioural sciences. Applicants are selected on academic merit and demonstrated interest in the provision of services to people with special needs, especially needs in rehabilitation or rehabilitation arising from vision jobs.

Career opportunities

Orientation and mobility (O&M) instructors work in the health and disability sector with people of all ages. Working environments may include the client's home, school, university, day centre or workplace. It may also including working with a client on public transport and within the wider community. Orientation and mobility is also one of the pathways for those interested in becoming a Guide Dog instructor.

Professional recognition

The course is recognised by the Orientation and Mobility Association of Australasia.
