Course description

This integrated program is designed to produce graduates with specialist skills in health informatics and health information management. The course offers completion of a Bachelor of Information Systems degree in combination with a Master's degree in Health Information Management over a four-year period. However, students may exit at the end of the third year with a Bachelor of Information Systems.

Course structure

The course consists of a broad-ranging core curriculum covering computing, business, and management subjects, together with a wide range of electives.
First-year studies include foundations of management, management information systems, systems analysis and design, object-oriented programming, human biosciences, and medical terminology. Second- and third-year studies include databases and database management, web application development, health information management, health informatics, and an industry-based information systems project. Fourth year covers advanced subjects that form the Master of Health Information Management.

Additional costs (AUD)

Approximate costs include: Clinical coding books (must be purchased every two years) - A$395, police check (A$$14, 2009 indicative fee only), memory stick - A$30-60.

Middle Band

Completion of Mathematical Methods, Specialist Mathematics or Physics facilitates an additional 1.5 aggregate points per study, to a maximum of 3 points. Performance in prerequisite studies also considered.

Prerequisites

VCE Subjects 1 & 2: General Mathematics or Mathematical Methods (either). Units 3 & 4: Minimum study score of 25 in each of English (any).

Career opportunities

Graduates' training can be utilised in healthcare and non-health related fields. There is a huge demand for professionals who are expert in health informatics and health information management. Hospitals and health services throughout Australia are upgrading and expanding their health information, with a move towards the development of more sophisticated electronic clinical information systems. As new and expanding information systems are implemented, demand for skilled professionals will increase.

Professional recognition

The Bachelor of Information Systems is accredited by the Australian Computer Society. The Master of Health Information management in expected to be accredited by the Health Information Management Association of Australia in mid-2009.
